If you know how to build the thing you're trying to hack, you're a better hacker. Install software, configure it, and break it from the inside out. Then, when attacking from the outside, use that knowledge. Eventually, you'll notice obvious flaws.

It's because I'm still dealing with the consequences of my actions every day. It's difficult to 'move on' when there are few options to 'move on' to.
